📍 Plants Can Grow in Lunar Soil

For the first time, scientists have grown plants in soil from the moon collected by Nasa’s Apollo astronauts. They wanted to see if it could be used to grow food by a new generation of lunar explorers.  Scientists planted <Thale Cress> in moon soil returned by Apollo 11. They were surprised to see that "plants were actually growing in lunar soil." The downside was that after the first week, they grew more slowly than seedlings planted in dirt from Earth.  After 20 days, those grown in lunar soil were under stress and reacted in ways the plant typically would in harsh environments. Nonetheless, NASA said the research is key to understanding how plants might overcome stressful conditions in food-scarce areas here on Earth. This is a big step forward to know that you can grow plants. The real next step is to go and do it on the surface of the moon.
