📍China's Weibo shows user locations to combat 'bad behavior'

 

China tightly controls its cyberspace and puts more efforts to "clean up" the internet.  Chinese social media sites that fail to censor critical content will face the temporary suspensions of service under current law.   Weibo is a China's version Twitter and it has over 570 million monthly active users. Weibo will start to publish their IP locations on their account pages in order to combat "bad behavior" online.   Some users were disturbed by the decrese in their online anonymity. However, others said they support the measures. Especially when the COVID situation is still serious, IPs revealing can effectively reduce the appearance of disgusting content from rumor-spreaders.   For users in China, the platform will display the province or municipality where they are posting from. For those using Weibo overseas, the country of users' IP addresses will be displayed.
